What’s the difference between AWD and 4WD?

All-wheel drive

All-wheel drive is a drivetrain that directs power to all four wheels of the vehicle, through a front, rear, and centre differential system. This means that all four wheels will have power, although it won’t necessarily be divided equally.

Four-wheel drive

Four-wheel drive is a powertrain that utilizes two differentials, front and rear, along with a transfer case. This will provide power to all four wheels of the vehicle equally.

Both systems provide better acceleration, as all four wheels are used to launch the vehicle forward—this is especially true when the road doesn’t allow for a lot of traction. This can also benefit towing, as well as handling on dry roads (when the vehicle is equipped with some form of torque vectoring, like Ford’s Torque Vectoring Control found on the Focus and Mustang). Having an AWD or 4WD system can also improve the resale value of your vehicle down the road, however it will add cost to your purchase upfront.
