What does the ST in Ford ST stand for?

Unsurprisingly, when you factor in their incredible performance, the ST in Ford ST stands for “Sport Technologies”. While impressive performance has always been a hallmark of the Ford brand, from heavy-duty pickups to the original pony car the Ford Mustang, these vehicles take it one step further by adding some serious upgrades to these already stellar Ford rides.
While the ST designation has appeared on Ford vehicles as far back as the 1997 Ford Mondeo ST24, it wasn’t until 2008 and the Ford Fiesta ST that the Sport Technologies designation became a regular part of Ford’s yearly offerings.

What’s the difference between an ST and ST-Line vehicle?

While vehicles sporting the ST badge offer both performance upgrades along with interior and exterior upgrades, Ford vehicles with the ST-Line distinction only offer the interior and exterior upgrades. These models provide the same athletic details found on the ST vehicles, while providing a more modest performance—though, it’s important to not confuse modesty with a lack of power, when a vehicle like the Ford Edge ST-Line is still equipped with a turbocharged, 250 horsepower engine.

What models are offered in either ST or ST-Line trims?

Currently, there are two models offered as either an ST or ST-Line trim, the Ford Edge and Ford Explorer. While there is the possibility of more models to come under the Sport Technologies banner, there are a variety of other performance vehicles and top-level trims available across the Ford lineup, whether you’re looking at the 2022 Ford Mustang or something like the rugged Timberline trim available on the Ford Expedition.
